Most of us have had an unpleasant experience with a clogged bath tub drain sometime in their lives. It seems that after the drain gets clogged for the first time, more and more incidences occur after that. But rest assured, most of the time clearing a clogged bath drain is not as hard as it may first seem.

Bath Tub Drain Blockage

Identify what is causing the clogged bathtub. The most common debris that blocks bathtubs are hair, soap grime, and shampoo build up. If the clog is near the top of the drain, you can use a bended coat hanger or a pair of tweezers to release the drain from waste.

Using a Plunger to Clear a Clogged Bath tub

If the clogged bath tub is harder to clear with your bare hands than you initially anticipated, you may want to consider using a plunger.

1. Make sure there is enough water to cover the rim of the plunger
2. Place plunger over center of drain
3. Push plunger up and down 4-5 times under direct pressure
4. Lift plunger up to reveal the drain clearing
5. Repeat until clog is cleared and water flows smoothly

Using a Plumber's Snake to Clear a Clogged Bathtub

A plumber's snake is a long steel cable that is flexible and can be manipulated through drains. It can be twisted while inserting into the clogged drain to rip any debris from the sides of the pipes.

If the clogged bathtub is backed up from a location in the pipe that the plumber's snake cannot reach, it is best to feed the snake through the drain closest to the clog. This will ensure the best use of pressure and give you a better chance of clearing the clogged bathtub drain.
